A New Nation Report :
The story of BSRM goes back to 1952 when intrepid businessmen Taherali Africawala and Akberali Africawala ventured to put up the first steel rolling mill of the country in Nasirabad, Chittagong. When the partition of India in 1947had deprived the erstwhile East Bengal of its entire steel and construction materials source, their venture, BSRM, was a bold attempt to fill the gap.
From a humble beginning in a tin shed, BSRM has emerged to be the first steel industry in Bangladesh to receive ISO 9001:2000 certification. The present mill of BSRM was bought from the UK and was the first automatic rolling mill in the country in 1984. The production from the mill then was 1800 tons per month. Since then it has undergone modernisation, notably the addition of a 500mm 3 high roughing mills to handle 130mm square billets. A flying shear with high speed brakes and twin channels were also added to raise the mill’s productivity.
Adjacent to the rolling mill in Nasirabad, BSRM Group first started making steel billets in 1996 and its another unit, also in Nasirabad, BSRM Iron and Steel Melting Works (BISCO) went into production in late 2009.
The combined billet making capacity of the two units is 250,000 tons per annum. The plant operates state-of-the-art solid state-rectifier controlled medium frequency induction furnaces for melting steel scrap and directly reduced iron (DRI).
BSRM produces quality steel billets that meet international standards for construction steels.
BSRM’s steel making units have invested in the most extensive air pollution control and dust recovery system in the industry and is the only such system installed in the country.
Located on a 11 acre site on the Dhaka-Chittatgong highway in Fouzderhat, BSRM steels Ltd is the first continuous rolling mill in the country to roll 12 meter long 160mm X 160mm billets. A proven DANIELI patented bars thermal quenching and tempering technology ensures the steady production of high strength reinforced deformed bars for the construction industry. It is the country’s first producer of 500-MP a-yield strength re-bar, proving BSRM’s quest for innovation and continuous up-gradation of its products and facilities.
The bars conform to ISO 6935 and BS 4449 Grade 500 and ten major international standards. Further it is fully compliant with the BSTI bar specification, which is the legal standard in Bangladesh.
The present capacity of the plant is 100,000 tons per month. The plant is capable of producing bar sizes from 8mm to 40mm in diameter, all in the Grade 500 category.
