The leaders of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik League (BSPSL) alleged that Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation (BSPSF) collects Tk 45 lakh everyday as extortion from four bus terminals in the city.
“The BSPSF collects extortion from the transport owners in the name of the welfare. Some owners and workers run the organisation and compel the
other owners and workers to pay extortion. They collect at least Tk 45 lakh per day,” they said.
The leaders of BSPSL said this at a press conference in the National Press Club on Friday.
BSPSL President Md Rafiqul Islam and its General Secretary Insur Ali were present at the conference, among others.
Insur Ali said, according to the statistics of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), there are 24,91,299 registered vehicles in the country. The BSPSF collects the money from all the vehicles at Fulbaria, Mohakhali, Sayedabad and Gabtali bus terminals.
He also alleged that the organisation kept the government under pressure and obtained permission to ply the unfit vehicles on roads.
He blamed that the organisation comprising the leaders and activists of BNP and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami try to destabilise the country’s good atmosphere.
Insur Ali placed 12-point demand including stoppage of collecting extortion, to stop eviction of truck stands from the city, and to remove unfit vehicles from the streets.
He also threatened of tough movement if the government did not take proper initiative to stop such malpractices.
