Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Treasurerthese three along with five more importantposts are vacant in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University at Gopalganj.
After the resignation of Dr Khandaker Nasiruddin it is about 10 months running that Prof Dr Md. Shahjahan is performing the routine duties of the Vice Chancellor from 9 October, 2019, he is also the chairman of the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering of the University,
The posts of Director of Finance and Accounts, Chief Medical Officer, Librarian of Ekushey February Library and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering are also vacant. In addition, all the deans appointed to the four faculties, including the registrar, are appointed on contract basis and some of them were the director of further development projectswith additional responsibilities.
However, this is not the end of the list of emptiness. Two institutesnot have the governing body and one of the departments does not have the approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC). There are no Profs in 29 departments and three departments one institute do not have any
teachers of their own. The educational activities of all these departments and institutes are going on through the guest teachers.
Apart from these, there are also deficits in classrooms, labs and accommodation bytalking to students from different departmentsit was learned that out of 34 departments, at least 20 departments have classroom crisis and 10 departments have lab crisis. Out of 12,000 students in the university, only 2,000 students get housing facilities in five halls, which is only the 16 per cent. The students also complained that there are various problems including lack of reading room, hall library and cafeteria.
According to the student statement, after the resignation of former vice-chancellor at least nine movements sparked out at the university for various demand. But the acting vice-chancellor cannot solve those problems for the limitation of his administrative power.A third-year law student, toldthat “it is very sad for us that almost 10 years after the establishment, the main gate, mural of Bangabandhu and the permanent ‘Shaheed Miner’ have not been built in our university, not even a student-teacher center or canteen.” For the lack of regular vice chancellor, the salaries if daily-wage basis workers have been postponed from September of 2019.
Meanwhile, teachers and students are blaming the former vice-chancellor’s unplanned and authoritarian decision for the current state of the university. They feel that these crises have been created as a result of opening new departments one after another and increasing the number of seats without ensuring facilities.
Prof Dr Md. Shahjahan the acting Vice-chancellor of BSMRSTU said, “the University cannot take any decision without the permission of regent board but I’m not authorized to call the meeting of theregent board.”‘For the lack of power I can’t solve the ongoing problems of the university’- he added.
Prof Dr Md. Nuruddin Ahmed, Registrar of BSMRSTU confirmed these and said vacancies of these important posts have created serious roadblocks at this university.
Note that, BSMRSTU was established in 2001 but for political revenge of the four party alliance the activity started at 2010. At present there are about 12,000 students studying in the university under 6 faculties and 3 institutes.
