Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Khondoker Md Nasiruddin resigned from his post on Monday, amid ongoing protests demanding his re4signation.
Earlier, the VC had spoken with the minister, deputy minister and senior secretary of the ministry about his resignation.
Education Minister Dipu Moni said, “I have received the resignation letter. We also have the University Grants Commission (UGC) investigation report in hand.”
Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury said, “The Vice-Chancellor did not want to stay (in his post anymore). We are reviewing the investigation report.”
Earlier on Sunday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) probe committee, formed to investigate the alleged misdeeds of VC Nasiruddin, had recommended that he be removed from the post. In the report, UGC Member Professor Dil Afroze Begum said the five-member investigation committee found evidence of irregularities and corruption on the part of Prof. Nasiruddin.
Students of BSMRSTU at Gopalganj have been staging non-stop demonstrations for 11 days, demanding the VC’s resignation.
They also continued their sit-in programme on the university campus on Monday.
The students started their protests when the BSMRSTU authorities issued an order to suspend second-year law student Fatema-tuz-Zinia earlier this month, for her supposedly objectionable comments about BSMRSTU in Facebook on September 10.
However, the university lifted the suspension order on September 18, after the news went viral on social media, and sparked severe criticism about the university.
On September 20, authorities shut down the university until October 3. The university authorities also asked the students to vacate the halls.
On September 21, at least 20 students of BSMRSTU were injured during attacks by the VC’s supporters.
Ignited by the incident, the students strengthened their protest against the VC, and demanded his resignation.
