Staff Reporter :
The authorities of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Saturday abandoned the recruitment of 200 senior staff nurses amid allegations of irregularities in the process.
The decision was taken at a syndicate meeting held on its campus in Dhaka.
The syndicate also decided to recruit some nurses on the ad hoc basis to overcome the prevailing crisis, sources said.
A five-member probe committee headed by Independent lawmaker Rustam Ali Farazi, also a member of the syndicate, was formed to investigate the recent incidents and the nurse recruitment process.
There was an allegation that 76 applicants, who were from Tangail district, got more than 80 marks in the written test. Of them, 23 were from Ghatail, the home upazila of VC
Professor Kamrul Hassan Khan.
The result of the written test was not, however, approved by the syndicate.
A tense situation prevails at BSMMU since January 19 with the VC reportedly assaulting Pro-VC (Academic) Professor Zakaria over the recruitment of nurses.
But the VC rejected the accusation against him.
On January 24, Health Minister Mohammed Nasim asked the BSMMU authorities to follow alternative rules in recruiting nurses in view of the corruption allegations.
