Rafiq Rafi :
The authorities of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) will take action against accused four doctors over the death of the female patient following the removal of her two kidneys, instead of one.
‘We will take action against the doctors as per the recommendation of the inquiry committee formed by the BSMMU authority’, said VC Prof Kanak Kanti Barua. After getting the report, the committee will review their decision.
Meanwhile, Mamun-ur-Rashid, Officer in Charge of Shahbagh Police Station said to the New Nation that the case had been transferred to Detective Branch of Police for invevtigation. Now according to the law, the case will be investigated by the DB and necessary action would follow.
The Human Rights Commission expressed dissatisfaction on Wednesday, as the investigation report did not clearly contain the information of the accused.
After meeting with BSMMU authority, Human Rights Commission members said it was unfortunate that the medical authorities had not taken any action in the last two years. The accused even remained on duty in hospital till Tuesday. Meanwhile, the VC told the New Nation that the doctors had been taken off duty.
Brigadier General Zulfiqar Ahmed, The director of the hospital, said on Wednesday that departmental action would be taken against four doctors as the allegations were initially proved.
Film Director Rafique Sikder, son of the victim filed the murder case against four doctors.
The accused are Dr Habibur Rahman (Dulal), Professor of the Department of Urology of the BSMMU, Assistant Professor Dr Faruque Hossain, Dr Mostafa Kamal and Dr Al Mamun.
Rafique Sikder said that in order to conduct a fair investigation, the statements of both sides should be taken by the inquiry committee of BSMMU. But the committee never called me for any information, paper or statement.
Nobody knows the inquiry report. On what basis the investigation was conducted, he added.
“I want justice for my mother’s murder. There are controvertial persons in the inquiry committee. To conduct an impartial investigation, BSMMU authority should form committee with undisputed person,” he said.
National Human Rights Commission is monitoring the matter and murder case, he added.
According to the case statement, Rafique Sikder admitted her mother Rowshan Ara in the Department of Urology of the BSMMU on July 1, 2018 with infection in a kidney of her.
After the treatment, she was released from the hospital. During the follow-up treatment, Rafique Sikder was told that it became necessary to remove his mother’s left kidney through surgical procedures. Later, he admitted his mother to the hospital and the left kidney was removed through operation on September 5.
As Rowshan Ara’s condition deteriorated, his son took her to a private hospital. After examination, the son learned that the right kidney of her mother had been removed.
Though the accused urologist claimed during the operation that his mother’s right kidney was not functioning, he removed it silently and did not inform the attendant of the patient about it.
Rafique Sikder said that Doctor Habibur Rahman confessed to the crime and entered into a written agreement with them that he would do the kidney transplant of the victim at his own expense. But he wasted time. On the other hand, he left his mother in a coma in the life support of ICU of BSMMU Hospital. His mother died there on the night of October 31.
Rafique Sikder further said that there was a delay in getting the autopsy report.
The doctors were probably influencing it in some way. This has made delay in filing the case.
According to Rafique’s family, some doctors at BSMMU’s urology department cut off Rowshan Ara’s two kidneys and sold them. In the hospital, a 12-year-old child died, to whom they gave a completely healthy kidney, but after the transplant, the doctors said that the kidney was also damaged. When Rowshan Ara was admitted, Dr Mamun’s mother was admitted there. He also had two kidneys damaged. After treatment she is now completely healed. They now want a proper investigation into this incident.
