Professor Dr ASM Zakaria Swapan, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), died of prolonged illness at BSMMU at 11.45 am on Wednesday.
He was 55, family sources said, adding he was suffering from liver cancer for long.
Dr Zakaria left behind his wife, a son, a daughter and a host ofrelatives, colleagues, students and well-wishers to mourn his death.
His first Namaz-e-Janaza was held at BSMMU central mosque at 3.00 pm.

In a condolence message, the Premier prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
After a long battle with liver cancer, the 55-year-old Swapan breathed his last on Wednesday at the BSMMU Hospital in Dhaka.
Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader expressed profound shock at the death of Dr Zakaria.
In separate message, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim also expressed deep shock at his death.
