Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC), an organization founded by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is moving towards building a fleet of ocean bound mixed merchant ships. It is working to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purchase of two 80,000 tonnes mother bulk carriers for transporting coal, two one-and-a-half million tones mother tankers for crude oil and mother product oil tankers for diesel-jet fuel within a year.
According to sources, so far 44 ships have been listed in the BSC fleet under government patronage. In the eighties there were 27 ships together. At present there are only 6. Of these, 8 new ships of 39,000 DWT made in China in 2017 have given life to the fleet of BSc. MV Bangla’s modern ships called Jayayatra, Samriddhi, Aarjan, MT Agrayatra, Agradutta and Agragati are ferrying goods and red-green Bangladesh’s reputation in different ports of the world.
The other two oil tankers 14 thousand 541 DWT Bengal Jyoti and Sourav were made in Denmark in 1986.
These are lightening the fuel oil of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) at Patenga Rivermooring Jetty from outside the port of Chattogram .Due to old ship repairs, docking charges, high fuel consumption, etc., BSC sources said.
BSC Director (Technology) Engineer Mohammad Yusuf said that BSC has been able to add 6 new seafaring ships to the fleet with the efforts of the government in the 2018-19 financial year.
