UNB, Barishal :
Students of Barishal-Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (BSBMC) have been staging demonstrations in front of the academic building since Wednesday morning, demanding safe dormitories for them.
The protesters took to the streets around 8 am and then went for a sit-in protest in front of the academic building and the office of the principal.
According to the protesters, there are six separate halls for female and male students and all are in dilapidated conditions. Besides, they claim that peeled-off plasters from the roofs of the dilapidated buildings often fall on them.
Ehsan Ullah, a student of the college, said the Habibur Rahman dorm is in a vulnerable condition. “Immediate repairs are needed.”
Tahsin Ahmed, another student, said the authorities concerned had earlier declared the Habibur Rahman dormitory as “unsafe”, but no steps have been taken yet for the rehabilitation of its residents.
“We want action within seven days. Otherwise, they will embark on an indefinite strike,” said Sagar Hossain, a fourth-year student of the college.
Prof Maniruzzaman Shaheen, principal of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, said that construction and repair works will start soon in the dormitories.
