AL leader among 2 held in Jhenaidah: Brutal torture again

Police on Saturday arrested two persons, including a local Awami League (AL) leader, for brutally torturing a youth by hanging him with a tree at Sreepur village in Harinakundo upazila of Jhenaidah district.
The arrested men are Sreepur Union AL former General Secretary Shahinur Rahman alias Tuhin, 50, and Jubo League activist Kazi Babul, 30, in connection with the incident.
They were picked up soon after filing of a case by the victim’s father Omal Ali on Friday night, Md Asaduzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Harinakundu Police Station, told The New Nation on Saturday.
The law enforcers are hunting the two others accused to bring them to justice, the police official said.
Police are investigating the incident as a video footage of the torture incident went viral on social media, the OC said.
In a query, he said that police would have been cleared about the motive of either political involvement or any dispute for committing the incident .
Earlier, the 25-year old victim Rana was tortured brutally on charge of stealing a Television set from union AL office on December 27.
Tuhin brought Rana to the office and tortured him by hanging him from a jackfruit tree on charge of stealing the television set.
Soon after the incident, a video footage of the torture incident went viral on social media.
According to the case statement, on December 27 a television set was stolen from Sreepur Awami League office. The following day, Tuhin brought Rana in the office and tortured him by hanging him from a jackfruit tree on charge of stealing the television set. Later, they handed Rana over to police.
However, Police found no evidence of his involvement in the theft.
