The members of Barisal Reporters Unity on Saturday noon holding the 16th half-yearly general meeting at BRU Auditorium asked for immediate implementation of wage board with pension and called for unity among the journalists.
The BRU also thanked government for starting registration of the journalists and called for empowerment of press council to prevent yellow-journalism.
The meeting was presided over by Anisur Rahman Swapan, President, BRU and financial statements were placed by Qamrul Hasan, General Secretary and Masuk Kamal, Finance Secretary of BRU.
It was addressed among others by Kamal Masudur Rahman, Sushanta Ghosh, Bidhan Sarkar, Nazrul Biswas, Shamim Ahmed, M Ariful Islam, Mushfiq Shourav, Rehman Anis, Russel Parvez Sohag, Mir Khalilur Rahman, Siddikur Rahman Jony, Morjina Begum, Robiul Islam Roby, BRU members.
They said journalism could never be considered as a profession till ensuring proper professional status.
So they called for assurances for professional safety and security of the journalists by implementing wage board with pension, especially for them who working outside Dhaka to create professional dignity, job security and job satisfaction.
They also put the spotlight, in particular, on the issues of safety of journalists, combating steps against freedom of expression, easy access to information and securing a free and open Internet as the precondition for freedom of speech and developments of the nation.
They also called for unity among the different journalist groups and organizations to achieve their legitimate rights and prevent oppression against freedom of speech and journalists.
