BRTA sends eight brokers to jail

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority’s (BRTA) four mobile courts separately jailed eight brokers for different terms and fined them a good amount on charge of harassing service seekers in the city’s Mirpur, Uttara and Tejgaon areas on Tuesday.
The Executive Magistrates of the BRTA passed the order based on the confessional statements of the offenders, said a press release of the BRTA issued on Tuesday. At least 39 cases were filed for violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, it said.
According to the press release, a Mobile Court led by Executive Magistrate Muhammad Abdus Salam, conducted a drive at Mirpur Section-13, jailed
 five brokers and fined them Tk 1,800 in four cases. The accused were Ratan, Ziaul Haque, Md. Ashik, Md. Selim and Babul.
Another Mobile Court led by Executive Magistrate Md Munibur Rahman, conducted a drive at Uttara and fined the wrong-doers Tk 22,500 only in 13 cases.
A third mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Zohra Khatun, conducted the drive at Tajgaon and fined Tk 17,500.
The fourth court led by Executive Magistrate Sujit Hawlader conducted drive at Equria, Keraniganj and sent Md. Suman, Md. Masud and Md. Abdur Razzaque to jail. The court realized Tk 48,300 filing 17 cases under Motor Vehicle Act.
Witnesses said, BRTA launched the drives and caught the brokers while they were harassing the service-seekers. Later, the mobile court handed down punishment to them. The convicts had been sent to jail.
