About 12 kilometers long incomplete road of the Tongi-Gazipur portion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project might sting the Eid passengers.
At his, the passengers and the motor workers, who travel regularly, said “acute traffic gridlock is a common phenomena between Tongi and Gazipur.
In such situation, the sufferings will be intensified during the Eid holidays because of massive rush of passengers and vehicles.
Stakeholders said that Tongi to Chandana Avenue of the project is not completed yet as a result traffic gridlock, a regular scenario.
Meanwhile, the BRT authority claimed to have completed about 73 per cent work of the project. They also have taken various initiatives to tackle the excess vehicular movement during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
They said that the middle position of the road has been fixed for the buses and the other two portions in west and east side would be used for every type of transports.
They said that most of the construction work had been completed, but portion of the area is still incomplete though works continue to reach.
“The construction work of the BRT’s 12 kilometers road from Tongi to Chandana Avenue is on. As a result, bus and other vehicles go slowly. It takes five to six hours to cross only 12 kilometers road. We are anxious with the Eid time speed in this situation,” said Abdullah Hossain, a bus driver of Dhaka-Mymensingh road.
He and other bus drivers say there are huge dilapidated condition also in the three kilometers to be taken as a major reason for the gridlock.
Meanwhile, officials of the BRT authority said that not only the road condition is responsible for the traffic gridlock, but the indiscipline of motor drivers during the vehicular movement also a great reason of the problem.
When contacted, Neelima Akhter, Executive Director of Dhaka Transport Co-ordination Authority (DTCA) And Coordinator of Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit Company Ltd, told The New Nation on Thursday, “Motor drivers indiscipline during their driving and keeping the buses stopped in the places of the road also widely responsible for traffic gridlock as we found in our recent visit in the BRT project.
We asked the bus owners association to address it.”
The BRT Coordinator said, “We have visited the road recently to mark and find out ways of resolving the problems to avoid gridlock in upcoming Eid festival.”
“We marked several problems including incomplete construction work and anarchies made by motor workers and have given necessary directives respectively,” she said.
The BRT Coordinator said that they tried to complete the construction work as soon as possible.
“But the construction work itself also causes the gridlock as the when the activities take place the vehicular movement must be slowed in those road,” she said.
Neelima Akhter said they have found several problems in house building area, entrance point of Gazipur city corporation, Abdullahpur, Chandana Avenue and such other areas.
“We found buses have been kept in the entrance point of Tangail road in Chandana Avenue which made the vehicular movement portions shrunken and cause huge traffic gridlock,” she said.
The BRT Coordinator said that they have directed the concern authorities to remove all of those buses from the area away to free the road for vehicular movement.
She also said that the Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur scheduled to visit the road on Thursday for monitoring the situation of the road for taking urgent measures.
When contacted, A.K.M. Manir Hossain Pathan, Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and Director of Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit Company Ltd told The New Nation on Thursday, “We are working hard to complete the Naojor flyover from Bogramore near Tongi by April 25 to 26. So that many vehicles can go through the road during the Eid which can be helpful for curbing the gridlock.”
He said, “We have monitored the road for last three months closely ahead of the Eid. If the makeshift shops and irregular bus stoppages do not take place, the gridlock will disappear and journey will be fair and painless.”
