Using improved machinery in rice cultivation during Boro and Aman season across the country, Tk 11000 crore could be saved annually from misuse and additional labour charge, said a report of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI).
The machines include BRRI developed weeder, prilled urea applicator, reaper, closed dram thresher, open dram thresher, winnower and rice-wheat harvesters.
Under the project of the Farm Machinery Technology Development and Dissemination, (FMTD) BRRI has distributed 5,380 machinery among the farmers at 60 percent subsidized price. About 20,000 farmers will be benefitted by the FMTD project in 24 upazilas of twelve districts in the country. Tk 17.4 crore could be saved by using BRRI machines in the project areas in a year.
This was disclosed during the concluding workshop of FMTD project held at BRRI auditorium in Gazipur on Saturday. Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Shaymol Kanti Ghosh was the chief guest in the workshop while BRRI Director General Dr Jiban Krishna Biswas presided at the function.
Chief of Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural Institution Division of the Planning Commission Sarder Ilias Hossain and Joint Chief of planning subsection of the Ministry of Agriculture Md Monjurul Anwar, BRRI Director (Administration and Common Service) Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir and BRRI Director (Research) Dr Md Ansar Ali were also present.
Dr Md Abdur Rahman, Head of the BRRI’s FMPHT division, and Md Kamruzzaman Milon, the Coordinator of the project, presented the key-note-paper of the workshop.
About two hundred representatives from different government and non-government organizations, including scientists, specialists, university professors, extension agents and farmers, attended the workshop. The scientists of the FMTD have found that Tk 17.4 crores could have been saved by using BRRI machines in the project areas in a year.
They said if the same technology could be used throughout the country in about 115 lac hectares of land in two seasons, Tk 11 thousand crore could be saved. Sources said that the last five years, 5,380 agricultural machinery of different kinds had been distributed among the farmers with 60 percent subsidized price.
The activities of the project cover 24 upazilas of twelve districts in the country. These are Gobindaganj, Sadullapur, Panchbibi, Joypurhat sadar, Sonaimuri, Begumganj, Sripur, Kapashia, kumarkali, Mirpur, Chuadanga sadar, Alamdanga, Natore sadar, Singra, Shibchar, Madaripur sadar, Chandpur sadar, Haziganj, Nagorkanda, Alfadanga, , Nachole, Gomostapur, Tanore and Mohonpur.
A total of 20,000 farmers were benefitted by the activities of the project. Farmers along with the manufacturers of agricultural machinery of the 10 districts have also received technical assistance training on the appropriate use and maintenance of the machines.
