Brother gets life for killing younger’s wife

A court of Chittagong on Sunday in a verdict awarded life term imprisonment to a man on charges of hacking his younger brother’s wife to death over a family feud 20 years ago.
The judge of Divisional Public Safety Tribunal Syeda Hosne Ara pronounced the verdict convicting Nur Mohammad for killing Nazma Akthar, wife of younger brother Mir Ahmed, hailed from North Pahartoli area under Halishahar Thana of the city on January 6 in 1996.
The court also fined him Taka 20 thousand, in default to suffer six-month more imprisonment and acquitted his mother Aysha Begum of the charges.
The prosecution story is, in brief, that the convict killed the victim over a family dispute when her husband was absent from the spot. Later, victim’s sister Nasima Akthar filed a case against six persons including her husband and his relatives in this connection but police after investigation acquitted her husband Mir Ahmed of the charges from the chargesheet. Police submitted chargesheet on June 18, 1996 while the court pressed charges on July 10, 2002.
The court on Sunday delivered the verdict in absentia of the life-term convict after examining a total of 12 prosecution witnesses.
