Farming of broccoli, a nonconventional winter vegetable, is increasing day by day in Haor areas in Kishoreganj..
Like the previous couple of years, the newly harvest vegetable along with other ones has appeared in the local markets. The broccoli produced here are now going to the Capital Dhaka and others part across in the country, the local demand.
It is learnt that thousands farmers from 13 upazilas including hoar areas of Kishoregan are now trying to change their lot by by cultivation this nutritions vegetable. Green leafy broccoli like cauliflower is the most popular in Itali and United States (US).There is also as huge demand for broccoli in some development countries of the world including China, Thailand and the United States.
Alal Miah, a farmer in Pakundia said the broccoli produced here is now begin sold at many hat-bazas in Kishoreganj.
Although it looks like cauliflowers, the production cost of broccoli cultivation is low,he added.
He also said that Broccoli can be eassly cultivated in normal agricultural lands in Itna hostel weather.
Farmer kartik in Dhanpur of Itna haor said the market priceof broccoli is quite good, Even though it is the same crop as cauliflower, it is being sold in the market at a higher price.
According to the Agriculture Department in Kishoreganj, 40- 50 thousands broccoli plants can be produced from one Hector of land in 65 to 70 days. There is one broccoli per plant.
Agriculturalist said this green leafy vegetable like cauliflower belonging to the genus. Cruciferae is rich in calcium, potassium, folate and fibre..It prevents heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Broccoli prevents cell damage by providing antioxidants, vitamins “A” and “C”. Broccoli contains high levels of Vitamin C.Just 100 kilograms of broccoli can meet 150 percent of the daily requirement of vitamin C in the human body.
Deputy Director in Agriculture Extension of Kishoreganj district Agriculturists Saiful Alam told the New Nation that know ad the vegetable zone,has a bright potential for commercial broccoli cultivation, Broccoli cultivation is being encouraged among the farmers as this vegetable production is comparatively cheap and profitable.
