Speakers at a function here yesterday underscored the need for bringing the married adolescent girls under safety net activities through protecting them from all sorts of obstacles.
They opined that cordial support and assistance from the family members and united efforts and coordination of all the stakeholders of the society are very essential to change the socio-economic condition of the married adolescent girls.
They made the comments while addressing a meeting titled ‘Initiative for Married Adolescent Girls’ Employment’ at the auditorium of SKS Inn at Radhakrisnopur, an outskirt of the district town.
SKS Foundation organised the function with the financial support of The Netherlands Government.
Deputy Commissioner Gautam Chandra Pal addressed the meeting as the chief guest and Superintendent of Police M Mashrukur Rahman Khaled and Civil Surgeon Dr Amir Ali were present as special guests.
With M Rajab Ali, head of programme of SKS Foundation, in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by deputy director (DD) of Department of Family Planning Dewan Morshed Kamal, DD of Department of Social Services Emdadul Haque Pramanik, Sadar upazila parishad chairman Abdul Karim, UNO Alia Ferdous Zahan, district information officer Sabiha Akter Lucky, and journalist Sarker M Shahiduzzaman.
The speaker emphasised on building social movement about the checking of the early marriage to save the adolescents from different types of difficulties, including their physical problems.
District coordinator of the project Modasseruzzamna Milu said the project was launched at the union in 2014 for 1,397 married adolescent girls.
This year, Monohorpur union of Palashbari upazila was also brought under the project targeting 1,031 girls and it would continue till 2020, he added.
Training on different issues going on
Training activities on different issues including income generating one have been continuing at Sadar Upazila Parishad campus of the town for a month last.
Upazila Parishad is conducting the trainings under Upazila Governance and Development Project (UGDP) of Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Cooperatives while Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing the fund.
Under the project designed for five years, a total of 12 transgenders (Hizras) are being imparted training on sewing at the campus of the Upazila Parishad with joint arrangement of upazila administration and upazila social services office, said upazila development facilitator of UGDP Most. Shabanab.
Apart from it, training on employment entrepreneurs development for youths are also going on at the management of Upazila Administration and Upazila Youth Development Office, she said.
Earlier, the training on poultry birds, goats and cow fattening for poultry farmers, beggars and farmers of the upazila were also held involving the officials of Upazila Livestock Office last month, Shabanab added.
Trainings on EGP at the arrangement of Upazila LGED Office and training on disaster and management of Upazila Relief and Rehabilitation Office would be commenced just after completing the on-going trainings at the supervision of the Upazila Administration, she further added.
UNO Alia Ferdous Zahan said the trainings are being conducted in a bid to enhance the capacity of the trainees so that they could involve in income generating activities to improve their livelihoods, life standards and change the socio-economic conditions.
Officers and employees of different offices and Union Parishad chairmen and members would also be benefited and increase their working capacity undoubtedly taking training from the project, she added.
