Moulvibazar Correspondent :
Several brick kilns are operating near different schools and destroying agricultural land in Moulvibazar without getting renewal or clearance from the environment Department. This is causing serious ealth hazard for school students including local residents due to black smoke, ash and environmental pollution.
According to the locals, the Department of Environment has not given the renewal clearance, yet the brick kilns are continuing their work regularly. Occasionally there are reports of fines being levied on brick kilns, but no permanent solution.
During a recent visit, this correspondent found that some brickfields had been set up in residential areas, on agricultural land, and even beside schools.
According to Moulvibazar Environment Department, Ibrahim brick kilns, Safari brick kilns, MMB brick kilns in Kamalganj Upazila have no environmental renewal clearance. In addition, the license of M/s. Mohsin Bricks has been canceled. Apart from these four brickfields, two more brickfields called Palash Bricks have been set up on the agricultural land adjacent to Kataltali Government Primary School.
According to the existing environmental law, no brick kiln can be constructed within 3 kilometers from educational institutions, hills, research institutes and localities.
