Cox’s bazar Correspondent :
Different points of the flood control embankment at Rajakhali union across Pekua coastal area in the district have completely gone into the Bay of Bengal.
Aa Water Development Board (WDB) is not doing any reform work of the embankment in the affected areas, the Kutubdia channel-based villages are on the verge of destruction due to strong current of the sea.
To prevent access of saline water into the locality, people here have constructed some ring dams at different vulnerable points with their own fund.
To prevent submergence by water at different areas of Rajakhali union including Matborpara, Bokshiaghona, Sundaripara, and Bholar Mukh during high tide caused by monsoon wind in the rainy season and new moon and full moon, the villagers have already constructed these temporary ring dams at those areas.
A vast area of Rajakhali and adjacent unions had been totally damaged by the cyclone in 1991 and Aila in 2012, causing the areas to submerge with saline water from the sea.
WDB conducted reformation work in those areas several times but with no effect. In 2014, teams of WDB and higher authorities concerned came to visit the erosion-prone areas several times, but they did not visit Rajakhali area for some unknown reasons.
This correspondent visited the affected areas and saw the people of the areas living under constant threat of submergence by the sea water.
Recently, Rajakhali Union Parishad Chairman and local Awami League leader Nazrul Islam Sikder Babul took steps to construct temporary embankments in the areas, but these are not sufficient against the actual need.
The chairman said, “I’ve taken temporary steps, in cooperation with others, to tackle the situation by constructing ring dams.”
