About 70% emergency-repairing work of Saidpur town protection dam in Nilphamari district has been completed in a week jointly by Water Development Board (WDB) and Bangladesh Army.
Priority has been given to repair the breaches as heavy onrush of floodwater through the breaches during the flood even entered inside Saidpur Air Port compound and posed serious threat to other imp. infrastructure inundating several thousand homesteads. Left embankment of Kharkharia River flowing beside the town is used as town protection dam and it collapsed at four different points like Basunia para, Patwari Para, Kashiram madrasa and Pal Para areas on 12 August due heavy rainfall
Abdus Shahid, Executive Engineer of WDB in Saidpur Division said, 70% of the work has been completed in one week only till 23 August as started from 16 of the month”
The works include making parallel rows of bamboo and wood piling and throwing of sandbags at the basements.”
He expressed optimism to complete the work by 30 instant as throwing of sand bags only in the upper portion is remaining.
” It may seem surprising that we’ve no fund to do the emergency work right now and we managing everything on credit which we’ll be paid after getting fund,” he further said
WDB has engaged all out strength to urgently repair the damages while Bangladesh army monitoring the all out work, he added.
Minister for Water Resources Anisul Islam Mahmud visited the affected spots of Saidpur on 14 August and suggested local WDB to gear up repairing work
Brigadier General ABM Shefaul Karim, Commander of Saidpur Cantonment also visited the breaches on 16 August and offered WDB to work jointly to combat the situation. Visiting the spot at Basunia para, it was found that the work of sand bag throwing in the breach is going on.
A local resident Abdul Jabbar said, ” As the dam collapsed, several thousand paddy fields in the area have been ruined compelling us to take shelter in Saidpur college.”
Ziaul Huque, Panel Mayor of Saidpur municipality said, “Emergency repairing work of the breaches make people of the municipality relieved and we like to thank WDB authority and army for their sincerity.”
