A fan from a club in northeastern Brazil has died after falling from the stands while celebrating his team’s goal.
Authorities say the 41-year-old man died of head injuries after falling from about three meters (10 feet) into the area separating the stands from the pitch at the Almeidao stadium in the city of Joao Pessoa on Sunday.
The player who scored the goal in second-half injury time was running toward the section where the fan was located and saw him fall, then immediately turned around and desperately called for help.
An ambulance entered the pitch to attend to the fan, interrupting the local championship match between Auto Esporte and Sousa for nearly 10 minutes.
The Auto Esporte fan died in the hospital.
The Paraiba state championship match ended 1-1.
