Brandishing arms 2 BCL leaders sent to jail

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka on Sunday rejected the plea of the prosecution to place two Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders on remand in a case lodged for brandishing firearms during a hawker eviction drive in the capital’s Gulistan area on October 27, last year.
Magistrate SM Masud Zaman passed the order after hearing. The two accused persons are: general secretaries of BCL, Dhaka South and Wari Police Station units- Md Sabbir Hossain and Md Ashiqur Rahman respectively.
Shahbag Police Station SI Emranul Islam, Investigation Officer of this case, sought a seven-day remand each to quiz the two student leaders about legitimacy of their firearms. Earlier the CMM Court rejected their bail petitions after they surrendered to the court on February 9 and sent them to the jail. On October 27, 2016 during a drive to evict hawkers from the footpath in Gulistan area of the capital, clashes ensued among the hawkers and employees of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and a group of young men. The two accused- Sabbir Hossain and Ashiqur Rahman were seen brandishing firearms on the spot. SI Md. Mannan of Shahbag Police Station filed the ‘attempt to murder’ case with the police station against the two former general secretaries of BCL units.
