Severe erosion of Brahmaputra River has devoured major portion of the villages such as Baluakanda, Nak Kata Char of CharAlgi Union at Gafargaon Upazila and Charkatihari, Shaheber Char at Hossainpur Upazila under Mymensingh and Kishoregonj.
Due to unabated erosion of Brahmaputra , some places of these villages have disappeared and all these houses and land properties are devoured by the river Brahmaputra.
The erosion is also threatening the existence of many crops lands, houses of people, mosque, primary school, play ground, and ferry ghat of char area.
Locals said at least 2000 feet of Nak kata Char – Shaheberchar including Charkatihari Road eroded by the river Brahmaputra within one month causing sufferings to twenty thousand people of these unions. If no step is taken to prevent river erosion, the joint flow may damage the whole Shaheberchar ,Nakkata Char, Baluakanda, Charkatihari area” Salam Chairman of Jinary Union, Masud, chairman of Charalgi Union .
At least 100 families have become homeless in Nakkata Char, Charkatihari and Shaheberchar areas due to recent erosion while locals sources said that at least 500 families have shifted their houses again and again .
Siddik Mea , an erosion victim of Shaheberchar said, we have shifted our house three thrice . Hosne Ara Khanom, a woman of Charkatihari said, our two-third of land property has been devoured by the river Brahmaputra. Now we have become homeless.
Hundreds of students now bound to cross the eroded river by engine-boat, getting afraid they could not reach their institution in due time. Sometimes the boat sinks into river in the rainy season. Every year boat sinks into river and many people die by accident.
Tidal-bore, river-surge and surrounding areas damaging housing, crops, communications,fish farming and the affected locals alleged. The locals also alleged that the Covernment and the concerned authority have not taken any step to prevent river erosion. Dider Mea , Babu students of University urged the Government to look into the matter and try to save them from the devour of the river Brahmaputra.
Many villagers are bound to leave this paternal house for survival to the other places. They have to take another profession in order to survive. Some people becoming homeless, they are bound to take begging for maintaining their families.
They even did not get any relief materials from any authority. The higher authority assured them to help but in vain. They have sent a proposal to build up an embankment to the higher authority to protect the people of char area. Otherwise, the whole char area will be devoured in the river Brahmaputra.
Kushiara River erosion threatens Chanpur-Manikkona Road
Sylhet Correspondent adds: Chanpur-Manikkona Road of Fenchugong is now under the threat of erosion of River Kushiara. It is on important road where daily a large number of vehicle run. To avoid it any untoward incident happen any moment local people urge to repair the road an emergency basis. It is the only road to communicate people of north Fenchugong union. The road was constructed by LGED at the northern side of the river kushiara. Recently it is facing erosion particularly in Gongapur at the near of kazi nuruddin house two third of the road collapse about 3 feet at the river side. There is no duplicate road so people face it with risk any time the are will be fell into river.
Kazi Nuruddin told this reporter that it lost his sleep. out of 5 room 3are damaged. here moved his furniture to another 2 rooms and live with his family under risk.
North Islampur CNG Auto stand manager Golam Rasul Zitu said, as Their is no alternate road people use it with risk. They urge to repair the road immediately.
UNO in Charge and AC (Land) said, Tahsildar of the land office visited the spot. UNO take step after he return to office.
Upazila Engineer Jihan AL Tuhin said, This road is near the bank of the Kushiara river. After the flood it is facing erosion. Local brick field ply heavy vehicle so a great damage held. He said WDB should co-ordinate the work for the preservation of river Bank. Chief Engineer of Sylhet LGED inspected the road and informed it to higher authority.
