Staff Reporter :
Bangladesh Railway (BR) is going to recruit about 17,000 officials and employees this year for the posts, remaining unfilled for over a decade, as about 29 cases are pending against the BR, Director General of Bangladesh Railway Engineer Tafazzal Hossain said.
There are now 25,092 employees in BR against demand for 41,000. The shortage has created a lot of problems, including closure of over 150 railway stations, reduction of trains’ speed, failure to maintain punctuality and giving service to the passengers. But manpower recruitment could not be possible in 99 categories since 1985 due to the cases pending in the higher court, the DG said.
A railway’s top executive disclosed this during an view exchange programme about the projects of BR at Rail Bhaban on Tuesday.
Project Director and GM Sagor Krishna Chakraborty, Additional DGs Abdul Awal Bhuiyan (Rolling Stock), Amjad Hossain (establishment), among others, spoke in the function.
Only eight officials, as their additional charge, are supervising 44 projects, Sagor Krishna Chakraborty said. As a result, the implementation of some of the projects is being delayed, he said.
Railway statistic sources said, appointment of about 15,172 posts were held up for 29 cases. Of them 85 are gazetted posts, 406 second class, 7031 third class and 7650 4rth class.
