UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh Railway (BR) has chalked out an elaborate plan to set up various commercial establishments, including five-star hotel, motel, modern hospital, medical college, nursing institute and shopping complex on its land across the country, aiming to boost its earning.
Talking to UNB, Railways Minister Mujibul Hoque said the BR has chalked out various commercial programmes in a bid to develop the commercial side of the railway sector alongside ensuring the mandated services to people.
“We consider the railway as services sector, and this is why we give more importance
to people’s transport management than financial earning, but recently a plan has been chalked out to build five-star hotel, motel, modern hospital, medical college, nursing institute and shopping complex using its own 62,000 acre land across the country,” the minister said.
He further said, “We’ll implement these projects under Public Private Partnership (PPP). We’ll also take newer projects gradually.” He hoped that BR will be able to earn more using its land for commercial sectors.
Sources at the Railways Ministry said, the railway authorities will construct a 20-storey building for a five-star hotel and shopping complex on a 4.14 acre plot at Zakir Hossain road in Chittagong.
A transaction adviser has already been recruited for the project and a feasibility study for the construction has been done. The project will be implemented at a cost of Tk 850 crore, the sources added.
Besides, a shopping mall with hotel-cum-guesthouse will be constructed at Chittagong Station Road on a 0.4432 acre land spending Tk 92.7 crore. According to the sources, the BR will build a shopping mall with hotel-cum-guesthouse near Khulna Railway Station using its 1.78 acre land with the cost of Tk 240 crore.
The plan also includes the construction of a shopping mall with hotel-cum-guesthouse on 2.1129 acres of land near Comilla Railway Station spending Tk 294.5 crore.
In addition, the railway hospitals in Chittagong and Dhaka will be modernised and upgraded to 250-bed ones. Two medical colleges with 50-seat capacity each will also be established on the hospital campuses. The upgradation of the hospitals will cost Tk 800 crore. Additional director general (infrastructure) of BR Kazi M Rafiqul Alam said they will invite tenders for implementing the projects.
The sources said the BR will modernise the hospitals of Rangpur, Syedpur, Pakshi and Khulna through extension of those as well as construction of medical colleges.
In this regard, Railways Minister Mujibul Hoque said BR will invite a tender soon in this connection.
BR has 61, 860.38 acres of land under its jurisdiction across the country. Of the land, government, non-government, autonomous, religious and educational institutors and private organisations have been occupying 4391.39 acres, the sources added.
