BR, Japan sign deal for ‘Bangabandhu Setu Rail Sangjog’ project

An agreement to appoint consultants for the ‘Bangabandhu Setu Rail Sangjog’ project was signed on the 2nd instant between Bangladesh Railway (BR) and Oriental Consultancies Global Company (OCGC), Japan, at the railway ministry auditorium in the city.
Additional Director General (infrastructure) of Railway Kazi Rafiqul Alam and General Manager of OCGC Ryohei Ishi signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.
Railway Minister Mujibul Haque, Secretary Firoz Salaha Uddin, BR Director General Amzad Hossain, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) representative to Bangladesh Takatoshi Nishikata, Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh First Secretary Toshiyuki Noguchi and senior officials of the ministry were present.
The consultants would update the feasibility study of the project, finalize the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report, conduct detailed investigation and survey to finalize detailed design, prepare tender documents, assist in tender processing and evaluation, and supervise the construction work.
The government has decided to construct a separate 4.8 km dual-gauge double rail bridge next to the Bangabandhu Bridge over the river Jamuna to cater the increased need for rail transportation at national and sub-regional levels.
The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) earlier approved the ‘Bangabandhu Setu Rail Sangjog’ project on December 06, 2016, with an estimated cost of Taka 9,734.07 crore.
Chodai Company Limited of Japan and Bangladesh Development Design Consultant Limited will also work with the OCGC.
