The leaders of the Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association (BPWA) have demanded withdrawal of over four lakh unfit vehicles from roads and highways and stoppage of carrying passengers by those vehicles immediately.
At the same time, they have called for imposing sanction on about 10 lakh illegal ‘Nachimon-Karimon’ on the highway.
The association leaders said it at a human chain on Tuesday in front of the National Press Club.
Secretary General of BPWA Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said, 29 percent of registered and 47 percent of sitting service buses are not fit for plying on roads and highways. Of the launches, 17 percents are unfit, yet they cruise with passengers in the river with risk, causing accidents in both highways and rivers every year.
He added that the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Bangladesh Internal Water Transport Authority formed a Vigilance Team, which played no effective role in removing passengers’ casualties and sufferings.
The vigilance team was given extra duty of preventing collection of extra rent from passengers, he said.
At the rally, Ruhin Hossein, member of Bangladesh Communist Party, said, the Government should look after the safety of passengers and work to end all kinds of irregularities centering the Saydabad Bus Terminal.
Gani Mia Babul, Joint Secretary General of Nirapod Sarak Chai, urged quick formulation of guidelines in order that the passengers are not harassed during the sale of bus tickets at the time of Eid.
Monirul Haque, Finance Secretary of BPWA, Aman Ullah Mahfuz, Publicity Secretary of BPWA, and Mohiuddin Ahamed, central leader, spoke at the rally among others.
