The National Board of Revenue (NBR) claimed that the five subsidiaries of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) did not pay Tk 151.86 crore revenues after releasing imported fuels.
The five subsidiaries- Padma Oil Company Limited, Jamuna Oil Company, Meghna Petroleum, Eastern Lubricant and Standard Asiatic Oil Company Limited- owed Tk 151.86 crore against some 266 bills of entry in different times.
According to a document of the NBR, the companies released imported fuel by violating the conditions of the SRO-20 from the Chattagram port in 2011 without paying import duty.
Scrutinizing the documents of the companies, the authority of the Chattogram Customs House raised the claim along with serving show-cause notices against them via BPC.
The documents also said the Customs House has already issued four letters different times for the due payment. Lastly, it issued a claim letter on May 16 this year. It also tried to contract with the representatives of the importers through phone.
Following the delay payment of the due, NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem held meeting with the high officials at the board’s conference room recently on how to collect the money.
Mohammad Shahidul Alam, Director (Finance) of the BPC, told The New Nation, “NBR has settled the amount against the BPC’s subsidiaries. We are taking time to pay the dues in order to scrutinizing the documents.”
“After scrutinizing the documents, we will pay the dues,” he added.
NBR officials said that they were trying to collect the dues through negotiation.
But if the companies fail to pay the amount, the board will decide regarding the issue, they added.
