Police arrested a student named Joydeb Sarker on charge of raping and killing a minor girl in Ashashuni upazila of Satkhira district on Sunday night.
The accused was identified as Joydeb Sarker, a student of HSC level of Budhhata BBM Collegiate School and College.
The deceased was identified as Sushmita, a minor student of Gabtola Government Primary School in the district.
The victim’s father Prosanto Das said that Sushmita used to receive tuition from neighbouring Nirmol Sarker’s daughter Ambika Sarker in their residence every afternoon.
On Sunday evening, Ambika Sarker’s brother Joydeb raped the girl in absence of their family members, he stated. Joydeb threw the girl into a pond after she had fallen unconscious, he added.
On information, police recovered the body around 11pm and arrested Joydeb.
Biplob Kumar Nath, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashashuni Police Station confirmed the matter to media that the body was sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for an autopsy on Monday morning.
Joydeb has confessed to raping and killing the girl. He will be sent to the court for deposition, said the OC.
