Barisal Correspondent :Barisal District Administration ended first phase of erecting boundary pillars on the bank of Jail Khal (canal) in the city on Thursday to prevent encroachments and grabbing.This work started from three month ago at Kirtonkhola River point and ended at Nathullabad point, said Nurul Islam one of surveyors of the operation.This 8- Km long canal would be 35 to 40 feet wide at different points. At least two hundred encroachers and grabbers crossed the canal boundary and the canal loosed navigability due filling by pouring garbage, mud etc., he added. Barisal district administration sources said more than one hundred illegal structures including 5 multistoried building, hundred shops constructed on both sides of the canal were evicted under a special drive since April to May.The evection operation was led by Sadar UNO and Assistant Commissioner (Land- in charge) Md. Abdur Rouf Mia.Operation will be continued till free the canal sides from the grabbers, AC land told.After erecting canal boundary pillars all other illegal structures would also be evicted, he added.Evicted and affected people were given enough time to find out alternative location, but they are failed to remove illegal structures even after given repeated notice, claimed DC of Barisal Dr. Gazi Saifuzzaman said.We called a Jail Canal cleaning drive on September 3, 2016 to involve the citizens to return and maintain its navigability and free the canal from the clutches of illegal occupants and grabbers, the DC Barisal added.
