Bottle-gourd farming changing fate of marginal farmers in Dupchanchia

Massive bottle-gourd farming have changed the fate of hundred poor and marginal farmers of all six unions of the upazila during the current season due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-impute.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, farmers of Gunaher, Merai, Kuraher, Keut, Pawgachha, Damkury, Talora, Taluch, Pawta, Dhaphat, Pallapara village of Dupchanchia upazila have brought around 50 hectares of land under bottle gourd cultivation aiming financial solvent taking logistic support from local agricultural offices. They have exceeded the official target of cultivating lucrative bottle-gourd vegetable with the production target of over 8000 pieces, DAE added.
A total 4-5 loaded three wheelers with bottle gourd is being sent to different district from Mohasthan kitchen market per week. The wholesalers are seen visiting the cropland during the season to purchase the crops from farmer directly. The farmers are getting satisfactory market price. “To make smooth cultivation of the crops, DAE has provided fertilizers as well as arranged a brief training for the farmers” a DAE official said. He further said, “They will through expand initiative steps coming season to make the programmme a grand success if the farmers of the area show interest in bottle-gourd cultivation.”
Mizanur Rahman, a farmer of Damkuri village under Dupchanchia upazila, has cultivated bottle gourd on 0.40 acre of land spending tk 2000 desiring financially self reliant in his own crop land in September last. He has already sold the vegetable by tk 10000 and rest of the vegetable will be sold for tk 4000 if the weather condition remains favourable till February, he added.
Mitigating local demand, the wholesalers from different villages are sending the crops different areas including capital city, said Hossain Ali, sub assistant agriculture officer of DAE. The growers are seen raconteur in this year as they are getting good selling price, he added.
