Over 400 char people have become self-reliant by cultivating bottle gourd in Gafargaon under Mymensingh.
Bottle gourd has been cultivated in char area of the basin of the river Brahmaputra.Neguari, Tangabo, Charalgi Unions more than previous years at Gafargaon under Mymensingh.Now the field is pageant with green and the hat-bazar are filled with winter bottle gourd in this Upazila. the farmers of this upazila are very happy to get due price and bumper production of winter bottle gourd in this season. They expected,if the price of bottle gourd exists the wheels of fortune of char people will be changed more than 500 farmers.
It is learnt that the local farmers have cultivated their lands more than previous years because of less price at their produced Aman, IRRI paddy in the last season.Bottle gourd has been cultivated much due to favourable weather and much price, less production cost.
Agriculture officer said, the target of cultivation of bottle gourd has been fixed at 180 hectres in this upazila. But 200 hectres land have been cultivated in this current season. Many farmers are very much interested to cultivate bottle gourd because of less production cost.
When contacted with farmers, successful farmers Alal, Rasu, Nasir Khan, Suruj Mea, and Belal Mea of Baluakanda village of Charalgi Union are passing busy time with joy. Farmer Nasir Khan of Nedhierchar village of Charalgi Union informed , he has cultivated bottle gourd in his one acre land. At this , he has spent TK-12 thousand. In the meantime , he has sold bottle gourd about TK-40 thousand and hoped to sell TK-50 thousand the rest of bottle gourd from his land.Mafij Uddin said, the market price of bottle gourd is very high than the last year. A bottle gourd about 4 kg is being sold TK-50-60 . If this price exists, the wheels of fortune of many farmers will be changed and the standard of life also will be changed.
Upazila Asst.Agriculture Officer Golam Mostofa said, the farmers are very keen interested to cultivate bottle gourd in their lands for less cost and suitable weather because during this time their lands are out of agriculture .
Upazila Agriculture Officer Deepok Kumar Paul said, we have given them pesticides fertilizer and suggestion to get bumper production of bottle gourd in their lands. During a short span of time they can expect a good harves and much profit. So, the farmers of the deprived of facilities of char people are getting a better life in bottle gourd cultivation.
