Transplantation of Boro rice seedling has been continuing in full swing as the farmers already completed the process on around 21 per cent of the targeted land area in Rangpur agriculture region this season.
According to sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), steps have been taken to make the Boro rice cultivation programme successful ensuring smooth irrigation, supply of fuels, fertilisers, electricity and other facilities to the farmers.
Officials and experts of the DAE and other agriculture-related departments, organisations and institutions have been providing assistance to the farmers and working relentlessly to ensure smooth transplantation of Boro rice seedling in the region.
The government has fixed a target of producing 20.69 lakh tonnes of clean Boro rice from 5.02 lakh hectares of land for Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts under Rangpur agriculture region this season.
Under the programme, 7.17 lakh tonnes hybrid Boro rice will be produced from 1.51 lakh hectares of land, 13.49 lakh tonnes high yielding variety rice from 3.48 lakh hectares and 3.49 tonnes local variety Boro rice from 1,884 hectares of land this time in the region.
Meanwhile, the farmers have already prepared Boro seedbed on 28,111 hectares of land, higher by 4,459 hectares or 18.84 per cent than the fixed target of preparing the same on 23,652 hectares of land in the region.
Of them, they have prepared Boro seedbed on 7,988 hectares of land for hybrid variety, 19,697 hectares for high yielding variety and 425 hectares of land for local variety Boro rice this season.
Talking to BSS today, Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said that the farmers so far transplanted Boro seedling on 1.04 lakh hectares of land, 21 per cent of the fixed target of bringing 5.02 lakh hectares of land under its cultivation.
“Over 2.51 lakh pumps, including power and diesel driven deep tube wells, shallow tube wells, low lift pumps and solar panel driven pumps have been put into operation for irrigating the Boro fields in all five districts under the region,” he said.
Regional Additional Director of the DAE Shah Alam said that officials of all agriculture related organisations were extending assistance to the farmers and monitoring supply of diesel, electricity and fertilisers to make the Boro farming programme successful.
