Purchasing paddy directly from the farmers was inaugurated in different upazilas of Barishal on Monday and the drive will continue till August 31, 2019.
Humayun Kabir, UNO of Barishal Sadar upazila, inaugurated the paddy purchasing at Barishal Sadar.
On Monday six tons of paddies purchased from two farmers of Sadar upazila, he added.
Nazrul Islam, Barishal Sadar Upazila food officer, said 141 metric tons of paddy and 300 metric tons of rice targeted for collection directly from the peasants of this upazila.
The Agriculture Department is collecting paddy containing with less than 14 percent moisture directly from the farmers which already received good responses from the farmers, he added.
Besides paddy was purchased directly from the peasant-card holder farmers of Gournadi, Mehendiganj and other upazilas of the district.
District food controller Aboni Mohan Das said government targeted to purchase 5,019 metric tons of paddy and 16,030 metric tons of rice directly from the farmers of Barishal division.
Among those amounts in Barishal district 1,587 metric tons of paddy and 4,452 tons of rice would be collected directly from the farmers at the rate of Tk26 for per kg paddy and Tk 36 for per kg. rice.
Goutam Roy, a farmer of Jagua union under Sadar upazila of Barishal, hailed the decision of government for procuring paddy directly from the farmers at the rate of Tk 26 per Kg for paddy and Tk 36 per kg for the rice.
I already sold 20 maunds of paddy and will sale more 20 kg soon, Goutam added.
Abdul Jail Haoladar, a farmer of Astakathi village of Barishal Sadar upazila, epressing his happiness said while in the market paddy was selling at the price of Tk. 400-500 per mound, government collecting that at the rate of Tk. 1040 per mound.
He cultivating paddy personally on 2 acres of land and giving lease (brogan) of 1 acres of land this year.
From own cultivated part he produced 180 mounds of paddy by costing 1.06 lakh taka. Already selling three tons as part of the produced paddy he received Tk.78 thousands and would not be looser if he could get same rate from the rest of the amount, farmer Jalil hoped.

BSS from Rangpur says: The government has started procurement of a record quantity of 2.24-lakh tonnes of boiled Boro rice, 14,641 tonnes of ‘Atap’ rice and 23,434 tonnes of Boro paddy in Rangpur division this season.
Officials at Rangpur Regional Office of the Department of Food today told BSS that the procurement drive began from April 25 last and would continue till July 31 next in all eight districts of Rangpur division as elsewhere in the country.
Regional Controller of Food Mohammad Raihanul Kabir said the government is procuring record quality of boiled Boro rice, ‘Atap’ rice and Boro paddy aiming at ensuring fair market price to common farmers.
Besides, another 251 millers will supply 14,641 tonnes of ‘Atap’ Boro rice at Taka 35 per kg while the government will purchased Boro paddy directly from the farmers at Taka 26 per kg.
“In addition, we have been procuring 11,788 tonnes of wheat directly from farmers since April 1 last and the process will continue till June 30 next. We have already produced 500 tonnes of wheat by Wednesday from all over Rangpur division,” he said.
“Adequate steps have been taken to maintain complete transparency in the Boro rice, paddy and wheat procurement processes to make the government’s goal of ensuring fair price of the crop to common farmers successful,” Raihan added.
District Food Controller for Rangpur Abdul Quader said 25,190 tonnes of boiled Boro rice, 726 tonnes of ‘Atap’ Boro rice and 3,998 tonnes of Boro paddy will be procured from farmers in all eight upazila of the districts this season.
Regional Additional Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Mohammad Ali here today said farmers have exceeded fixed Boro rice cultivation target this season in the region following various effective steps of the government.
The farmers have cultivated Boro rice on 5.19-lakh hectares of land, 19,695 hectares higher than the fixed target of bringing over 4.99-lakh hectares of land under Boro farming to produce 20.70-lakh tonnes of clean Boro rice this season in the region.
“Meanwhile farmers have already harvested Boro rice on 1.98-lakh hectares of land producing 73.80-lakh tonnes of clean rice at an average yield rate of 3.98 tonnes of clean rice per hectare in the region,” he said.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE at its regional office Khondker Md. Mesbahul Islam said adequate steps to ensure all facilities to farmers to achieve the Boro rice production target this season.
BSS from Nilphamari adds: Upazila Food Office in cooperation with local administration on Tuesday started Boro paddy procurement directly from the farmers in the district for ensuring fair prices of the staple food.
Upazila Parishad Chairman Shah Mohammad Abul Kalam Bari Pailot formally inaugurated the food procurement programme at a function on the premises of Kishorganj upazila warehouse in the district.
Upazila Food Controller Sohel Rana said a total of 350 tonnes will be collected from Kishorganj upazila while 985 tonnes of rice will be collected at the upazila during the current season. Prices of Paddy have been fixed at Taka 36 while price of rice fixed at Taka 36.
The Department of Agricultural Extension sources said the country has witnessed bumper boro yield as the government has provided all necessary support including agri-input to the farmers for boro paddy cultivation.
The government has taken initiative of Boro paddy procurement so that growers can get fair prices.
