Arshad Ahmed Asad , Gafargaon :
Harvesting of Boro paddy has started in full swing across Gafargaon under Mymensingh Agriculture Zone during last few days and farmers are ecstatic to witness a good yield of their bumper production during the current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said, a total of 20,700 hectares of land have been brought under Boro cultivation in this upazila . Over 90 percent lands have already been harvested and rest of the land would be harvested within a very short time.
Visiting the paddy fields in different char areas under the region, it is learnt that farmers are passing busy time reaping and collecting the paddy from early in the morning to late night with village women.
Sources from locals said, favourable climate, quality seeds, proper uses of fertizers, proper monitoring, advice of the field level employees are the main reason of bumper production. However, farmers are frustrated with the price of rice . The price of rice is less than the last year. As rice is being sold at TK 450 to 500 per maund in markets ,the production cost of per maund paddy is around TK 500. Rokon, a farmer at Charkatihari village under Hossainpur Upazila told the correspondent that he has brought one acre of land under Boro cultivation this season, spending around TK 11000. But he will not get profit which he wanted. Nuru Mea, Kamrul, Sirajul of Charalgi village said, they are not satisfied at all with the present price of their produce.
Besides, dearth of day labourers of the areas have gone away for working in the paddy fields during the ongoing harvest season. Crisis of labourer has become acute in the region and has also increased the labour cost. So growers are to spend additional money to manage farm labourers for harvesting their crops. It is said that one kg Hilsha fish can not be bought with 2 maunds of paddy.
As a result, farmers even if their school and college going children are engaged to harvest paddy so that they can reap and gather paddy before coming nor’westers, heavy rain and hail-storm. This natural calamity may occur any time which may cause damage to the crops.
Besides , Boro paddy which has grown in river-bed has become risky because water may have risen any time. If they can not harvest Boro Paddy in time , they will have to suffer for this future. Nowadays farmers are trying to produce Boro Paddy instead of Aus paddy which was the only paddy in the past.
