Boro farming target achieved in Gaibandha, Panchagarh

Boro paddy farming target in the project command areas of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) has been achieved in the district during the current season.
Office sources said the BMDA set a target to bring a total of 10,350 hectares of land under the cultivation this year with the production target of 61,950 tonnes of paddy providing irrigation facilities to the farmers at low cost.
Later, the target fixed by the authority has been achieved due to favourable climatic condition and providing need based facilities including irrigation, fertilizers and others to the farmers.
Now, the farmers of the district are so much busy to nurture the crop fields following the suggestions of the field level officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) to get desired production against the high value crop.
To ensure the supply of irrigation water to the paddy land smoothly, a total of 410 electricity run deep tube wells of the authority were kept fully functional in the command areas of the district.
Abdul Hai, a farmer of Barobaldia village under Sadar upazila said, “Generally, the farmers are to pay Taka 1500-2000 against a bigha of land to purchase irrigation water.
On the contrary, the farmers of BMDA command areas are to pay only Taka 700-800 to get irrigation water from the BMDA operated deep tube wells, he also said.
All the farmers of BMDA command areas of seven upazilas in the district expressed their deep satisfaction over the irrigation activities being implemented by the authority since 2005 here.
Talking to this correspondent acting superintending engineer of Rangpur circle M. Habibur Rahman Khan said like Gaibandha district the Boro farming had also been achieved in Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts under the Rangpur Circle during the current season.
BSS from Panchagarh adds: Farmers of the district are expecting bumper production of Boro due to favourable climatic condition.
They are now engaged in weeding, sprinkling urea fertilizer and nursing the cropland.
DAE sources said 40 percent of the deep tube-wells and shallow tube- wells engaged in irrigation are run by diesel and the rest are operated by using electricity.
The availability of diesel is easy and the price is also normal, according to the farmers.
DAE sources said this year target of Boro paddy cultivation in the district is 81,000 hectares of land and production target is 3,32,000 tonnes.
Bipul Chandra, a farmer of Shahapara village under Debiganj upazila said he cultivated Boro in one acre of land where the plants are growing excellently so he is expecting a total production of more than 80 maunds of the crop.
