Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is expecting to produce some 23000 tonnes of fresh Boro paddy in this current season across Dupchanchia upazila of Bogra district.
In spite of low price like last year, farmers of allsix unions of the upazila are seen passing busy time preparing fields and planting Boro paddy saplings.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) district office source said, we have taken a target to produce a total 23000 tonnes of fresh Boro paddy from 34000 hector of land if the weather condition remains favourable.
The lucrative short duration Boro paddy is mostly grown in Adamdighi, Dupchanchia, Shariakandi
, Shonatoal, Gabtoly and Sadar upazilas of the district for frequent rendering crops, DAE added.
While visiting the correspondent found, farmers of the low lying area including river beds of the mighty Nagor rivers started planting boro paddy around one to two weeks back and it will be completed within first week of February.
The growers are seen cultivating Ufshi, hybrid and local varieties of boro paddy abundantly aiming bumper production and financially self-reliant.
“Farmers need to spend over Tk 9,000 to plant boro paddy on one bigha of land for purchasing fertilizer, insecticide and irrigation cost in every boro season across the district.” said a farmer Nur Islam at Kuraher village under the upazila. “We have to sell our paddy at low price in the market as we cannot sell it to the government directly,” said Murshailn Rahman, another farmer of the village.
Kamal Uddin, 54, at Merai said, “I have already planted 3 acre of land before three days spending tk 44000 with the assistant of local day labourer.” He again said, “If the irrigation process remains in favor of cultivating the land, the farmers will plant the entire Boro paddy within very short time.”
Sub-assistant agriculture Officer Shah Alom said, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Authority (BADC) and DAE has taken some measure effective steps to make the program a grand success in this boro season.
