Speakers at a post-rally discussion yesterday underscored the need for boosting revenue earnings for country’s overall development.
They said proper functioning of the country’s business sector and other trade-related activities are the precondition to uplift the economic growth. There is no alternative to expand trade and business to a greater extent taking the country forward on the way to development, they added.
Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate organised the discussion at Rajshahi Medical College Auditorium in the city to mark the International Customs Day-2018. “Revenue is the oxygen of development and Revenue for Peoples Welfare” was the main theme of the discussion.
Member of Parliament Hossain Badsha and Member of National Board of Revenue Ziauddin Mahmud addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Muazzem Hossain, Commissioner of Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Rajshahi, in the chair.
Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Aminul Islam, BGB Sector Commander Col Gazi Sazzad, Income Tax Commissioner Dr Khandaker Ferdous Alam, Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Sarder Tamij Uddin Ahmed, Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Masudur Rahman Bhuiyan and President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries Moniruzzaman also spoke.
Laying stress on enhancing revenue collection from both internal and external sources, speakers said it could be the effective means of reducing dependency on foreign aid for executing the uplift programmes.
Importance should be given on creating mass awareness about more revenue collection for making the country economically self-reliant, they added.
In observance of the day, officials and staffs of the commissionerate organised a huge rally that paraded the city’s main thoroughfares, carrying placards, banners and festoons.
