Proper utilisation of the existing water bodies using the latest technologies could boost fish production in attaining self-reliance on fish output and meeting nutritional demand, fisheries experts said.
They were addressing a ceremony organised by Taraganj Upazila Fisheries Department on the upazila parishad premises here on Tuesday afternoon for releasing carp variety fish fries into the upazila parishad pond in the upazila town.
With Taraganj Upazila Fisheries Officer Deepa Rani in the chair, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Golam Habib attended the ceremony as the chief guest and released fish fries in the pond water.
The fish fries were released under a comprehensive programme of releasing fingerling by Upazila Fisheries Department to the water bodies, including flood plains, submerged rice fields, ponds and ‘beels’ in the upazila for boosting fish production.
Senior Assistant Director of the District Fisheries Office Shamsul Alam, Assistant Upazila Fisheries Officer Habibur Rahman Chowdhury and President of Taraganj Press Club Khabir Uddin Pramanik were present as the special guests.
In their speeches, the speakers said the government has been distributing free fish fries among fishermen and farmers through different departments and organisations to enhance fish production for improving rural livelihoods through cutting poverty.
They put special emphasis on bringing all water bodies, ponds, tinny water bodies, flood plains, ‘beels’, ‘haors’ and flood plains under fish cultivation using the latest technologies ensuring best use of all existing natural resources.
The chief guest said the present government has taken massive programmes in boosting fish production through ensuring proper utilisation of the water bodies for attaining self-reliance on fish and further accelerating the pace of development.
He also suggested all concerned for enhancing fish production along with protecting natural breeding grounds, stopping catch of smaller fishes to preserve extinct and indigenous fish species to achieve self-reliance by the rural people.
