‘Values as I see them’ by eminent thinker, writer Faruque Ahmed is a book on human values which is a great factor to contribute for a nation to rise. The writer inherited this from his family background. His father, a personality of great human values, could install in him this lofty ideal. It is a matter of great concern that now-a-days our society has changed mostly and our moral bankruptcy is a threat to our upliftment and development.
On the other hand, a nation can rise to the glorious height if the citizens are respectful of ethical norms and moral values with patriotic zeal to sacrifice for the motherland.
In this context the writer in his ‘Introduction’ says, “…To the best of my ability, I have tried all my life to play a significant role by providing various services to the people of our country in whatever small means. With this strong desire in mind I have undertaken the present task of capturing various episodic moments of my life in a few write-ups focusing on morality and values that I have nurtured in my mind since my boyhood. These write-ups appeared from time to time in the Daily Star Weekend magazine, The Independent and The New Nation…
In order to instill ethical and moral values in young people of our promising country, I have tried to come up with a few write-ups, which, I believe, will be of some use to my intended readers, for example, teenagers, especially the student community, who will turn into worthy and committed citizens of tomorrow to build a future nation combining values and scientific thinking to march ahead.”
The writer mentions ethics and morality, religion and honesty, good manners and etiquette-the set of values which guided decisions of his life. And he thinks the episodes will be helpful to the readers.
The Index includes: Honour and respect for Bangladesh 15, Use/Misuse of the cell phone 16, Homage to a philosopher 18, strong behind a match box 20, Remembering my faithful dog 21, Learning values 22, change we need 24, Two unsung heroes of our liberation War 26, Few minutes with Dr Muhammad Shahidullah 29, Love and affection for insame persons 31, Respectability derived by the students-1 34, Respectability derived by the students 11 36, With God- Sometimes and always 39, Paying homage to Ustand Alauddin Khan, 41, Remembering my respected school teachers, 44, Yes, we can 51, In quest of pleasure and learning 55, Friendship to all, how ? 58, Participating three historically glorious national events 63. Few minutes with poet Rafique Azad 72, Remembering my childhood playmate- Siddique- 75, Education and empowerment of women 78.
The miscellaneous write ups in this context are : English poems: My name is Jibran 87, My name is Fayyad Mahmud 88, I am Sakib 89. Bengali poems: Palestine Hey Swadesh Aamar, Praptir Jonno Bhalobasha and Chhoto Basha and Bengali article Atmojoibonik Bhabna.
The book has been dedicated ‘to the fond memories’ of the writer’s parents.
The writer has acknowledged to Begum Noorjahan Ahmed, Ahmed Abdullah Noor (Pablo), Latifunnessa (Shewly), Mohammad Faisal, Subrina Ahmed (Anita), Anisur Rahman (Shohan), Fatema Naz Ahmed (Kristie), Farhin Ashrafi (Oiyshee), Mashuk Elahi, Md Aminur Rahman and Mahmudul. Haque (Rajib).
The contents reflect the thought of the writer quoted here from his ‘Introduction.’ The humanistic appeal of the writer to the present generation is a gift for upliftment. They will be highly enlightened by the book. The writer dreams of a brighter and glorious future of Bangladesh. The write ups will inspire them to dedicate their lives for the welfare of the society and progress of the nation.
The cover by Syed Iqbal, eminent artist, is very much attractive. We expect wide circulation of the book. n
