Body of youth found in city manhole

The divers of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) recovered the body of an unidentified youth from a manhole at Chalantika crossing in the city’s Mirpur on Wednesday afternoon.
The body was recovered from the manhole at around 4:00pm. The identity of the youth was yet to
be known, said Abdullah Arefin, On Duty Officer of Mirpur Fire Station.
The youth went missing after falling in the manhole when he was cleaning garbage there, Abdullah said quoting locals.
Fire service people rushed there on information and continued operation till 10:00pm Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, they resumed operation and found the body in the afternoon, according to him.
The boy aged 17 or 18 got down into the manhole on Nilgoti Road at Chalantika intersection, he added.
The youth was given the task of cleaning the manhole by workers of a garment manufacturing factory, witnesses said.
“The boy removed some waste inside the sewer causing the water flow to rapidly increase,” they said.
