A young man named Sujan Saha died in police custody in Narsingdi. His body was recovered from Haridoa River with handcuffs.
The incident took place at Hajipur in the district town on Tuesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Sujan Saha, 22, son of Ajit Saha from Hajipur Daspara area. He worked in a cloth store at Shekerchar.
Relatives of the deceased claimed that he was severely beaten by the police after his arrest. When he died, he was thrown into the river wearing a handcuff.
However, police said that while Sujan was being taken to the police station after his arrest, he attacked the police with handcuffs and jumped into the river to escape.
Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Saheb Ali Pathan said Sujan was a professional criminal. There are about 10 cases against him including theft, robbery, snatching and fighting.
