Police recovered the body of an alleged drug peddler from an orchard in Toraf-Noapara area of Sheikhati under Jessore sadar upazila of the district early on Friday morning.
The victim was identified as Taleb Hossain, 48, a listed drug peddler and was wanted by police in several drug cases.
He is a resident of Barandipara area in Jessore town, sources said.
Officer- in- Charge (OC) of Jessore Kotwali Thana Mohammad Elias Hossain said that two groups of drug peddlers were firing each other at an orchard in Toraf-Noapara area at 1.15 am.
Police rushed to the spot and sensing their presence the drug peddlers attacked them. Police retaliated by opening fire that left a man seriously injured.
Other associates managed to flee.
Police admitted the injured person to Jessore hospital where on duty doctor declared him dead.
Police also recovered a pipe-gun, two rounds of bullets from the spot, OC mentioned. A case has filed with Jessore Kotwali Thana in this connection.
