The government has formed a high-powered committee on Sunday to step up the standard of Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, sources said.
According to the source, in view of recent ban on cargo flights from the airport by the United Kingdom (UK) raising security concerns, the government has taken the move.
The body was formed after a delegation of the United Kingdom met Civil Aviation Authority of
Bangladesh (Caab) at Prime Minister’s Office yesterday.
Headed by Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, other members of the committee are from foreign, home and civil aviation secretaries, security adviser to the prime minister and the Caab chairman.
Citing security concerns, the United Kingdom recently barred direct air cargo flights from Dhaka international airport.
Businessmen reacted sharply to it fearing huge losses of export earning due to the ban.
Aviation Minister Menon said he would attend office at the airport premises to oversee activities to ensure standard security. The prompt meeting was also a step to rectify in this regard.
However, days after the UK’s ban came, government has made some changes including appointing new head of Civil Aviation Authority yesterday.
Minister Menon yesterday told reporters that international standard scanners and close circuit cameras were installed at the airport as a part of the new security measure.
Earlier in the day, he said initiatives have taken to beef up security at the airport.
Meanwhile, according to the sources, an UK expert team on Saturday started examining the measures taken to improve the security at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
