Body formed to probe RAB’s involvement

The Public Administration Ministry on Wednesday formed a seven-member probe panel to look into the alleged involvement of Rab officials in the abductions and killings of seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam and lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker.Additional Secretary to the Public Administration Ministry Md Shahjahan Ali Mollah will head the committee formed following a High Court order.Contacted, Senior Public Administration Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury told UNB that the committee has been formed in compliance with the High Court order.On Monday, the High Court issued a suo moto rule asking the government to form a seven-member committee to investigate the allegation that Rab personnel were involved in the killing of Nazrul Islam and six others. The other members of the committee include two deputy secretaries each from the Public Administration, Home and Law ministries, the senior secretary said, adding that the committee has been asked to submit its report to the Attorney General within seven days. Issuing the rule, the HC had also asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure security of the witnesses in connection with the incident.It had also asked not to involve Rab in the investigation as it is the agency the members of which have been accused of taking bribe.Besides, the HC asked the Rab authorities to initiate departmental investigation into the allegation. On April 27, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver, were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of the city. Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer at district Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30.Besides, another body, believed to be of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on May 1.
