The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday approved the submission of charge-sheets against ruling party lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi, former State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan and his wife Hasina Sultana on charges of amassing wealth illegally.
The ACC approval of charge-sheets at its regular meeting held at its headquarters in the city.
On August 21, 2014, the Commission filed cases against Abdur Rahman Bodi, Abdul Mannan Khan and his wife Hasina Sultana on charges of accumulation of illegal wealth.
Earlier, the ACC had launched investigation into the alleged amassing of illegal wealth by them. After an
investigation, the ACC detected an abnormal rise in their wealth that they had amassed through illegal means.
According to ACC investigations, Abdul Mannan Khan amassed about Tk 2.65 crore illegally while his wife Hasina Sultana accumulated illegal wealth worth Tk5.5 crore.
The ACC probe found that Abdur Rahman Bodi accumulated illegal wealth of about Tk 6.33 crore.
The lawmaker’s annual income was only Tk 3.01 lakh in 2008.
According to his affidavits placed at the Election Commission, his income rose to Tk 15.46 crore in 2013.
MP Bodi’s earnings rose by an astronomical 500 times during the said period.
ACC investigation officer earlier went to Cox’s Bazar to collect documents and information on Bodi.
The officer also seized the income tax return statements of the lawmaker’s wife Shahina Akhter.
Media reports before the January 5 elections about the candidates’ declarations showed several former ministers and lawmakers had amassed huge wealth over the last five years.
The ACC took notice of the issue and decided to look into it.
