Boats will be plying waterways inside the capital as the government has recovered them from illegal encroachments, State Minister for Shipping Ministry Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said on Thursday
“We will make the canals pollution-free as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already approved this master plan and we are working jointly with the Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) ministry in this regard.”, he said.
The State Minister came up with the remarks while visiting the projects of saving river banks and border pillars of Turag, Balu and Shitalakhya rivers. Not only around Dhaka, small water vessels will be able to ply inside the canals of the metropolitan city if the master plan progresses accurately, he insisted.
“We have determined the river borders and works of border pillars, walkway and river banks are underway. After completion, illegal establishments will be bound to move away,” Chowdhury said adding that owners will get government assistance for shifting the dockyards.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Commodore Golam Sadek, members Nurul Alam and Dr AKM Motiur Rahman were also present there among others.
