The BNP will hold countrywide demonstrations on Saturday to protest the ‘massive arrest’ of the party men in the name of crackdown on militants.
The party’s Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Thursday announced the programme in a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office.
As part of the programme, he said, the Dhaka city unit of the BNP will stage a protest rally in the Institution of Engineers’ Bangladesh at 10:00am.
The other BNP units, including divisional city and district ones, will observe the programme the same day.
The BNP leader requested the High Court to issue a suo motu rule upon the government to stop the ongoing mass arrest and extra judicial killing.
“I, on behalf of BNP, requested the High Court to issue a suo motu rule asking the government to stop mass arrest and extra judicial killing,” Rizvi said.
He alleged that a wholesale arrest is going on across the country in the name of combing operation in search of militants in this holy month to suppress the government’s political opponents only.
Rizvi Ahmed claimed that at least 2,682 leaders and activists of BNP had been arrested in the ongoing combing operation since Friday.
“The government is arresting common people in false cases across the country to cling to power by repressing them,” he said. He alleged that the law enforcers are indulging in a ‘brisk business of arrest’ by targeting the innocent and common people. BNP chairperson’s Advisor Ahmed Azam Khan, Joint-Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Khairul Kabir Khokon, central leaders Abdus Salam Azad and Abdul Awal Khan, among others, were present at the press briefing.
