The BNP has announced that it would stage a demonstration across the country on Wednesday to protest against the verdict of party’s Senior Vice Chairman
Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case.
The party’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office in the city on Monday.
“BNP will stage demonstrations in all upazilas in the districts and police stations in cities, including Dhaka, on Wednesday in protest against the conviction of Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case scrapping his acquittal by a lower court,” he said.
Rizvi termed the money laundering case as the government’s political vengeance. Earlier, the party has observed a similar programme in the districts headquarters and cities across the country on Saturday on the same issue.
On Thursday, the High Court sentenced Tarique Rahman to seven years’ jail and fined him Tk 20 crore scrapping his acquittal in the money laundering case.
Rizvi alleged that the government is applying a new strategy to keep opposition leaders and activists in jail for a long time by filing false cases against them.
Citing examples, Rizvi said the government has kept Sylhet City Mayor Ariful Haq and Habiganj Municipality Mayor GK Gaos long time in jail by implicating them in ex-finance minister Shah AMS Kibria’s murder case out of political vengeance. BNP chairperson’s adviser Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, central leader Khairul Kabir Khokon, Taiful Islam Tipu, Munir Hossain, Aminul Islam, among others, were present.
