UNB, Dhaka :
BNP senior leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy on Sunday said their party will in no way join the next national election under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“Our movement is for restoring people’s voting rights, not only to go to power. We’ve to sacrifice more for it. We’ll rather wait until the doomsday, but won’t go to polls under Sheikh Hasina,” he said.
Gayeshwar, a BNP standing committee member, came up with the assertion while speaking at a discussion arranged by Shaheed Zia Education and Research Council at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).
Apparently pointing at BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed for his comment that it is a wrong perception that Khaleda Zia will not be able to join polls if she is convicted, he said, “Our some lawyers are giving formulas that we’ll join polls securing bail if we’re convicted. “You please stop giving such formulas.”
The BNP leader further said, “Why will we be jailed? It’s not a matter of joke that our leader (Khaleda) will be convicted for the crime she has not committed while the people who are supposed to get death penalty are running the country.” About the ruling party leaders’ comments that BNP’s registration with the Election Commission will be cancelled if it boycotts the next polls, Gayeshwar said it matters little whether their registration is cancelled or not when they are not getting chance for joining any fair polls.
He questioned why does the government still fear Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami though it has lost its political registration? “Why are you repeatedly telling BNP to leave Jamaat? What’s the point of abandoning Jamaat which is doing politics without any license? Mentioning that Awami League had carried out a movement together with Jamaat against BNP during 1996, Gayeshwar said when AL joins hand with Jamaat it is a political strategy, and “we become Rajakars if we do it for movement or election.”
